Iwakura Tomoaki (岩倉具詮)

Tomoaki IWAKURA (December 1, 1630 - May 14, 1680) was a Kugyo (court noble) in the early Edo period. He was the third family head of the Iwakura clan, a branch of the Murakami-Genji (Minamoto clan) Kuga family. He served for three generations from the time of Emperor Gokomyo (the hundred and tenth Emperor) to the Emperor Higashiyama (the hundred and thirteenth Emperor) and he was promoted to Junii Sangi (Junior Second Rank, Councilor).

He was a child of Gon Chunagon (Provisional Vice-councilor of State) Tomooki IWAKURA. His mother was a daughter of Ukone no shosho (Minor Captain of the Right Division of the Inner Palace Guards) Suefuji OGURA. He initially took the name Tomoie. In 1632 he was given a peerage. In 1639 he celebrated genpuku (his attainment of manhood). Then he served as Jiju (Chamberlain), Ukone no shosho (Minor Captain of the Right Division of Inner Palace Guards), Ukone no chujo (Middle Captain of the Right Division of the Inner Palace Guards) and in 1659 he became Jusanmi (Junior Third Rank) and he was ranked as Kugyo (court noble). In 1665 he was promoted to Shosanmi (Senior Third Rank) and he used this occasion to change his name to Tomoaki. In 1666 he became Sangi (Councilor), but the following year he resigned his post and in 1677 he became Junii (Junior Second Rank).

He adopted a child of his cousin Arikore CHIGUSA (Noritomo IWAKURA) and transferred the role of head of the family to him. Tomomi IWAKURA, a meritorious retainer during the Meiji Restoration, was his descendant.
